What The Month of December Means For College Students

December is everything to college students who finally get to come home and just relax without school to weigh down on them.

Let's face it, December as a whole is just an awesome month altogether. I would give everything for December hurry up and come because who doesn't like the thought of presents? Or the fact that with Christmas comes that wonderful rest of the month off for us students. Any college student who tells you differently is clearly lying because all I think about when this time of the year finally rolls in is how close I am to being free for a several weeks.

Granted, I'm pretty sure most of us just like the thought of December because it represents the end of a new year as well as slapping us all in the face that winter is here. For us in the Delta, it clearly means that we get to spend more time outside to hunt and the chances us of actually seeing snow is also at a higher chance. Although, I'm not the only one thinking it when I say this: The likelihood of us actually playing in the snow isn't likely despite the times where we had snow and it was amazing. But, that being said, we'll probably get freezing temperatures that'll quickly lead to ice. And also most likely, a lot of it.

But, for most of us who truly enjoy that month off, we don't care if it snows, ices, or is just plain hot because the cold weather is just simply a myth. We like the thought of actually having time to spend with friends and family. We like the fact that there's no homework or assignments or exams to worry about. That we can just relax and watch Netflix without having that nagging in the back of our heads while we catch up on The Originals or The Flash and saying that we should be doing said homework. That we don't have to feel rushed when coming home for the weekends and having to spend only so much time with our friends and family to work on projects and assignments.

Words cannot even begin to describe how I felt every time I came home for the weekend this semester wanting to enjoy the two days off with my boyfriend, best friend, and mom, but it was just impossible. Being an English major is difficult because of all the reading and essays, but there are also plenty of assignments and projects to worry about, too. I am twenty-years-old and have never felt so stressed, overworked, and sleep-deprived in my entire life than I have this past fall semester. I know there will be more semesters like this, but now I know how to properly deal with them so I hopefully won't feel as overwhelmed.

So, having this month almost completely off to finally wind down and relax is truly a blessing. I know there are other college students who very much agree with me when I say this: Christmas, New Years, and the beginning week of January are the best time for us. We can finally just enjoy being home without the weight of college and other responsibilities weighing down on us. I can spend time with my cousins and aunt and uncle, I can hangout with my best friend and boyfriend separately or together. I can spend time with my Mom now without worrying about school. I can spend hours on my laptop writing again for just the fun of it or read the books I've been wanting to read for months now without worry.

If you see a college student, your son or daughter, or your friend just lazing about or hanging out, keep in mind that this month off is very precious to us. Feeling truly free and able to do whatever without school keeping us in check is what December is meant for. The presents, the hunting, and chance of snow are just a well-deserved and added bonus.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
