The movie Molly's Game directed by Aaron Sorkin truly caused an awakening within me. As a brief summary and in an effort to keep myself from spoiling the entire movie, I will provide the following: Molly. Is. One. Bad. Ass. B*tch. Jessica Chastain carried Molly Bloom's character with grace and charm.
In the beginning of the movie, I had my doubts about Molly. It was actually hard for me to feel bad about what happened to her because she just seemed to be asking for bad karma. However, halfway into the movie I realized how similar we both were and maybe I was just projecting. Molly had a stand offish attitude towards everything for so long, but with all the trauma she had been through, I couldn't really blame her.
Molly learned how to be independent and strong in a mans world. Surrounded by men who treated her poorly and took advantage of her her entire life, she still found a way to stay true to herself. Molly's kindness reminded me much of my own. It seems we had similar childhoods and by the end of the movie, I couldn't help but shed a couple tears.
Even though the movie was merely a retell of the true story of Molly Bloom, I truly feel that it served as much more. Molly's drive and hustle inspired me to never give up. After everything she had been through she remained kind and forgiving. Throughout the entire movie she is seen helping those who have only done her wrong.
While Molly was proving to her lawyer, Charlie Jaffey, that she is far from what the tabloids have painted her as, she was doing so with the audience as well. Molly proved to be an incredibly relatable character. She constantly was misunderstood and manipulated, and coincidentally all times it was men who would be doing so.
As women we often find ourselves surrounded by male energy, especially in a working environment. We notice how men feel the need to mansplain constantly and prove their intelligence. However, Molly shows us that silence is more powerful than we think. She makes moves in silence and creates something successful and great out of nothing. Only when she is caught and handled so poorly do we realize how strong she is for holding it together. I mean imagine you were woken up in the middle of the night being manhandled by 17 FBI agents, all men, with automatic weapons while you stand defenseless. Exactly.
Molly Bloom may have been feeding into people's gambling addictions, but she ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game with some of the world's most elite, and did I mention she did it from nothing? Molly Bloom is an inspiration. The men may have been playing the game, but Molly Bloom was the one running it.
