6 Things I Miss Most From Home When I'm At School

There's no place like home.

There are so many great things about going to school far away, but that doesn't mean I don't still get homesick and miss things from back home. Here's a list of my top six things I miss from home.

1. My doggy

The best feeling in the world is coming home to my sweet dog who kisses me right when I walk through the door and snuggles with me.

2. My high school friends

We always joke that we peaked in high school, but there really is something special about the friends you meet during that time of your life. They grew up along side me as we all experienced awkward phases, countless "firsts" and the stressful crazy thing called high school, and it's nice to know they're still there for you even if you go to school hundreds of miles away from each other.

3. Home cooked meals

There's nothing quite like coming home with a list of food you want your mom to make. And there's no judgement in going back for seconds or thirds. People talk about the "freshman fifteen" college students often times gain, but honestly I think I eat more at home than I do at school!

4. My car

I miss being able to just take a drive and jam out to music in the process. It's also nice actually knowing where I'm going at home because it's hard for directionally challenged people like myself to get acquired to the new streets and highways around my college.

5. My bed

As much as I love sleeping in a lofted twin sized bed, the most heavenly feeling is being able to sprawl out on my bigger bed at home and get a good night's sleep.

6. My parents

Talking to my mom for hours on end and texting my dad every time even the smallest detail of my day just isn't quite the same as being at home with them. Sure they can sometimes get on my case about school and work, but at the end of the day I wouldn't be where I am without them.

Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
