Canada, what a nation. While we, the friendly neighbors to the north, share much when it comes to culture and personality, there are certain things that the good ole US of A just doesn't do quite right. Let's explore some of those things.
1.) Tim Hortons
Defend Starbucks all you want. Dunkin Donuts (also incorrectly spelled — doughnuts, come on people) just doesn't compare. America just has not managed to create such a wonderful place for coffee. Tim Hortons is a staple in the Canadian identity for good reason.
2. The Canadian Healthcare System
This is very undervalued until Canadians leave home. Honestly, we kinda forget about it. Isn't everybody covered? Why would I have to think about going to the doctor? It's a really different world, a world I wish all would have access to but as those from Quebec would say, "Ces't la vie."
3. Loonies and Toonies!
These coin treasures are just wonderful! Far more convenient then silly bills, and they make having some spare change not so bad. Coins don't rip and are far more durable! Come on, 'Merica, start the coin circulation!
4.) Real Maple Syrup
You don't think we can tell the difference between that sugary, thin, runny trash vs. the real shit straight from the tree? I can tell you right now, and I won't eat the first one.
Shout out to the Sugar Shack for knowing whats up!
5.) The Beer
I won't win this argument with the rock headed Americans (Anheuser Busch is lame), but nothing replaces Molsons, Steamwhistle, Moosehead, Creemore, or any of our wonderful beers. I try to bring as much Canadian beer with me every time I come back to the U.S. from Canada. It's just wonderful.
6. The Metric System
Just don't even get me started; America has it wrong.
7.) Our Crazy little Snacks
I just miss things like Coffee Crisps, and Smarties, and Ketchup Chips. Thank God they finally sent All Dressed Chips to America.
8.) Poutine!!!
Its actually amazing that america didnt come up with this crazy mishmash of awesomeness. Fries covered in cheese curds and then topped with — or, more appropriately, drenched with — gravy. It's fundamentally French Canadian and now a part of our identity. And it tastes unbelievably good, so.....love. <3
