What We All Miss About Summer

There's nothing like the summertime.

What We All Miss About Summer
Longboat Key News

With the end of Fall semester quickly approaching faster than I can catch my breath, I can't help but reminisce about simpler, sweeter summer days. Homesickness is hitting harder than ever as we count down the hours until Thanksgiving break. Although, that one brief week off won't be able to compare to the carefree glory of a three-month summer when we didn't have to worry about going back to a mountain of responsibilities and finals. Let's just take a moment to reflect on all the best things we miss about Summer:

Not having anything due.

Hands down- I think we can all agree that the best thing about summer is having absolutely nothing due, finally. Any college student knows that there's never such a thing as having "no homework," so you can take a huge breath of relief knowing you don't have to keep triple checking blackboard for anything you could've missed or could be doing. The word "syllabus" is no longer in your vocabulary for the next three months.

Having an open schedule.

Nothing really beats that feeling of waking up and not knowing or caring what the day has in store for you. The freedom of being able to choose what you wanna do with your day off is something we often take for granted at school when every second of our days are overscheduled and booked solid for weeks. Who needs a day planner when you could spend the whole day at the beach or just laying in bed with your dog -- whatever your heart desires.

Netflix binges minus the shame.

I'd like to pretend that I spent every day of my summer hanging out with my friends and going on spontaneous adventures, but realistically speaking I spent a solid portion of my summer going through seasons on seasons of shows on Netflix. Only this time, I had no shame about neglecting school work while doing so. Netflix binges just aren't the same at school when you know there's about a hundred things on your to-do list that you probably should be doing, instead of re-watching "Friends" for the 8th time.

Traveling.

If you're lucky enough to travel out of the country or even out of the state during your break, you know vacations are a much-needed part of summer. Sitting on a tropical beach or by a hotel pool with a drink in your hand and not a single care is exactly what dreams are made of. Unfortunately, you can't just pick up and go whenever you want when you have 4 exams 6 papers and 15 quizzes due at once.

Napping Whenever You Want.

Because naps just feel 100x better when you don't have any responsibilities for the day. No shame in your sleep game.

Day Drinking on a Monday.

Nothing says summer like a spontaneous day drink. No classes means every day is a perfect day to get hammered before noon for absolutely no reason. You'll never feel better than day drinking by the pool or on the beach with good friends and good music.

Hangover Recovery Days

For some reason, it's just so much easier to recover from a nasty hangover in your bed at home, most likely cuddling with your pets. They just get it.

Summer, we miss you terribly. We'll just be forever struggling until we meet again next year.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
