Ever wonder what it means to be a DAWG?
To tell you the truth, it's a lifestyle and a camaraderie that only a first hand experience can reveal.
Our spirit, our colors and our adorable mascot are what most people know about the University of Georgia. They know how amazing Athens is and that we have some of the loudest fans in the country. They know we have a lot of sororities and fraternities, a lot of amazing restaurants and great academic programs. But do they know what it actually means to be a Dawg?
As a junior, I can tell you that it means everything. There truly is nothing like being a Bulldog. As football season begins, we all rock our red dresses, jerseys and our “G” face stickers. We all consider a Saturday in Athens to be a holiday, and have absolutely no shame screaming at the top of our lungs and cheering for our players. To some, it might just seem that we love our football team. But to us, it's so much more than that. This university inspires us, challenges us and makes us proud to be students.
We don’t just dress in red and black to show who we are cheering for. We dress this way to show the pride we have for this amazing institution. We literally wear our hearts on our sleeves during these games and show the rest of the country that there is no place like UGA. The traditions and way of life here in Athens, molds us and shapes us into the individuals that we all want to be as graduates. The environment, our peers, and yes, even the classes, makes us who we are and we couldn’t be prouder. We walk into Sanford Stadium every Saturday not only to kick our opponent’s butt, but also to gather together as one and show our appreciation for this extraordinary place that we are lucky to call home.
So, when somebody from another school or town thinks that we just throw amazing parties and yell loudly at football games, they have no idea what being a Dawg is all about. It's a way of life and it's an opportunity that we are all lucky to experience. At the end of the day, win or lose, greek or non-greek, freshman or fifth year, WE are all the luckiest students in the world.
