What It Means To Be An Adult

There's a lot more to being an adult than just paying the bills.

What does it mean to be an adult? Everyone has their own impression of what being an adult means. For some it means freedom, for others, it means being flung on your own with no preparation. Well, there's a little more to it than that.

Being an adult means having to figure out where your money comes from. As an adult, you won't be able to run to your parents when you run low on funds. You will have to find a job and start saving. You will have to pay for your home, food, car and all your insurance. That may not start right away, but it will happen eventually, so the sooner you start saving the better.

Being an adult means having the ability to make your own decisions and dealing with the consequences. As an adult, you don't have to ask Mom and Dad for their permission to do something. You can just do it, but that also means Mom and Dad won't be to your rescue every time you make a stupid decision. You have to be smart about the choices you make, and you have to decide if you can handle the consequences on your own.

Being an adult means being the bigger person. You will find people that will drive you absolutely insane, but as the adult you will be able to ignore that and you will be able to work with them just like any other person. You will be able to avoid silly confrontations and keep your composure in arguments.

Being an adult means accepting the fact that you can't be friends with everyone, and that you won't keep your friends forever. Life takes people to all kinds of different places, and it's hard to keep in contact with everyone and balance life at the same time. You have to accept the fact that there's a good chance you won't be friends with your "BFF" for the rest of your life. You will find new friends. Your new friends will take you forward, but don't forget your old friends and how they got you to where you are now.

Being an adult means being able to laugh at your past embarrassments. You will be able to take your embarrassments in stride and not let them affect you and your confidence. There's so much more than your past disappointments and as an adult, you are able to grow from them.

There is a lot more to being an adult than meets the eye. This doesn't even include the scary stuff like bills. This is the personal stuff. The stuff that makes you an adult on the inside. You see the stuff your parents do every day, like work full-time jobs and pay all the bills and grocery shopping, but you don't see what they have on the inside. This is what being an adult means and what we all have to look forward to.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
