In lieu of my undergraduate degree coming to a close in three short months, I feel compelled to discuss how professors have to ability to drastically shape their students. What makes certain professors have such profound effects on students? Well, this question would be quite subjective depending on the student one is conversing with, but for me I feel I can answer this question quite clearly. The best professors that I have had during my four years of uni are the professors who desire to actually listen to their students. The classes that I have felt the most estranged from are the classes with professors who purely want their students to listen to them exclusively. However, the classes that I feel have changed me, compelled me, and provoked the most interesting thoughts have been the ones with professors who are hungry to hear students input. As a student, when I feel that my perspective is unimportant or irrelevant, I feel stifled and insignificant. The classroom is a very special place to me because it has the potential to alter everything for a young adult. It is a place meant for growth. I was conversing with a professor that I respect immensely about the idea that lecturing is dead on college campuses because lecturing typically insinuates that the professor is solely there to provide a flowing source of information for the students. And in this regard I believe this specific type of lecturing is in fact dead. Students can access a flow of information anytime they please with the internet at their fingertips. What students cannot access, and probably the base of my fondest memories of my undergrad, are open discussions combined with lectures that force the student to deduce ideas from the information provided for them. The professors who provide this type of learning are the professors who change students lives.
