What Your Major Says About You

What Your Major Says About You

Deciding on your major in college is like deciding your fate. However, for many of us, it has been pre-determined for years and are markings of your personality. Here are some common college majors and what they say about their scholars.

Biology: You probably want to go to med school, unless you're at a coastal school in which case you are a Marine Bio major. You have a type A personality and will tell anyone who will listen about the many parts of a cell. Your wardrobe probably consists of a lot of running and other exercise clothes that you don't use because you spend most of your time in a lab or studying.

Your Hashtag: #stressed.

English: You love some literature, you could go on and on about the many theories applicable to "Frankenstein," and you most definitely read the book before it was a movie. You are a book worm and your outfits display it with ironic t-shirts and hipster jeans. If one more person asks you if you're going to be a teacher you may kill them, but they're probably right.

Education: You are probably the mother of your group. You spend your free time babysitting or coming up with your next lesson plan. You should still be taken seriously however, because you work very hard all throughout college to get in and stay in the education program. Congratulations, now go forth and educate the next generation.

Business: You are most likely striving to take over the world a la "Wolf of Wall Street." You are probably going to be able to get a job just about anywhere you want. You may have entered into this major for the wrong reasons (following in your family's footsteps, the money, the trophy spouse), but your sharp instincts will get you through. Plus, as an added bonus, you'll be able to retire way before all your friends.

Psychology: You are probably the friend that everyone comes to for advice. You love knowing everyone's secrets and secretly diagnosing all of your friends. If you truly want a career in this field you are in for more school, just like the pre-meds. You study hard and enjoy being in the background. You probably have a really soothing voice and have been practicing the line, "And how does that make you feel?" since you were in diapers.

Your Hashtag: #Yourhairisfullofsecrets

History: You have an outstanding memory, especially for dates. You are a committed reader, but only of serious fact. You are probably the person in glasses at the bar who loves to "lecture" on their favorite historical personality.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
