What Do I Look For In Somebody?

Having standards does not mean you are being picky

What Do I Look For In Somebody?

What do I look for in somebody? Everyone always seemed to have this list of what they want in a significant other and it always seemed so superficial and shallow to me. Why would I want to sit there and have a checklist in my head every time I met someone seeing if they met those standards? The thought of that always seemed absolutely absurd to me. So I went on with my life with not really having an idea of what I looked for in someone else until I realized that I was not happy with the people I was letting into my life. I would always just settle for the person that said the right things, and if there were qualities I would not like about them, I would just overlook them because I didn't want to be too "picky". But guess what? I deserve better than that and so do you.

Once I spent awhile being single and learning to love myself and appreciate who I am, I decided that if I am going to let anybody in, they have to love me for who I am, and never expect me to change. Making myself a priority was the best thing that I could have done, because now I know that I deserve better.

So what do I look for? Here are just a few things

1. Someone who is genuinely kind

2. They do not make fun of people for being different, and know how to be respectful.

3. They don't put other people down to make themselves feel bigger/better

4. Has ambitions and goals

5. Supportive of the things I am passionate about

6. Listens to what I have to say and is someone I can confide in

7. God is an important part of their life

8. laughs at my jokes (I'm funny so it's kinda impossible not to)

9. Someone that makes me laugh (good sense of humor, obviously)

10. Makes life more enjoyable

11. Open-minded

12. My family loves them

13. Respects my opinions and beliefs

14. I don't have to change who I am so they will like me

15. They don't change who they are to make me like them

16. Being around them naturally makes me a better person

17. Hardworking

18. Has good taste in TV shows

19. Gets along with my friends

20. Will be my best friend

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
