What Living With A College Roommate Is Really Like

I came to college to live in a tiny room with a stranger for a year, what can go wrong?

What Living With A College Roommate Is Really Like
Personal

One of the most nerve-wracking parts of coming to college as a freshman is the prospect of your roommate. For me, move in day consisted of lugging too many suitcases to the fourth floor of Summit Hall, bribing my brother to help me unpack, and meeting a girl named Cassidy, who I was randomly assigned to room with for Freshman year. Any time someone inquired about my college plans, I was met with a roommate horror story from their freshman year. Even after stalking Cassidy on all social media sites, and even after finding a seemingly-normal person, I wasn't optimistic.

After a semester of living with somebody that was a complete stranger before move in day, I will not be one of those adults sharing a roommate horror story from freshman year. Chalk it up to fate or luck, but I got a pretty great roommate. Even though I've only known her for a few months, Cassidy is one of my best friends, but she's also like a sister to me, a bond formed by living together.

To all the seniors who will soon stress about their college roommate, maybe my story will make you a little optimistic. You and your roommate will spend more time together than you've ever spent with somebody else. You'll learn everything about each other.

Your roommate might sign up for 8 a.m. classes everyday and never hear her alarm, but you do. Your roommate might be a little messy and not do her laundry for 2 months at a time. Your roommate might drive you a bit crazy, and you might drive her a little crazy, as can be expected.

But your roommate also will quiz you on your flashcards at midnight for your exam the next morning. Your roommate will let you have more than half of the closet because you just have too many clothes. Your roommate will let you play your Netflix out loud when your earbuds break and you're on the ninth season of The Office. Your roommate will share her groceries and will always keep the mini fridge stocked with Fresca. Your roommate will be there to take care of you on Friday nights and you'll be there to take care of her on Saturday nights. Your roommate will love your best friend from high school like she's her best friend too. Your roommate will bring you home coffee when you're sick. Your roommate will never fail to send you that "good luck" text before that exam your stressed about. Your roommate will do facials, paint nails, order Krazy Karls, and watch movies and TV in your dorm bed together.

You and your roommate will decorate your room for Halloween. You guys will make a Christmas Card, join an Intramural Flag Football team, and buy tickets to Mexico for Spring Break together.

How do I know? Because mine did all of those things. Maybe I lucked out, and if that's the case, I hope everybody else does, too. Because college is hard and it sucks at time. But, it's a whole lot better when you can come home and be with your best friend.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
