What It's Like Having A Dad Who Knows Almost Everyone

Seriously, I swear he knows almost 30,000 people.

What It's Like Having A Dad Who Knows Almost Everyone

I'm from a small town, where everyone knows everyone, neighbors watch each others' houses, and the town itself only houses about 300 people. But, around this town, there are two slightly larger cities, and let me tell you, my dad knows almost everyone in them.

1. We can't go to Wal-Mart without him having to stop and talk to someone he knows.

I'd say we're in the store for probably 45 minutes every time we go, and we can't ever just "get in and get out".

2. He's always on the phone with someone, or is getting text messages every 3 minutes.

Someone heard about him through someone else, who just happened to also know him... it goes on forever. I think he has at least 400 contacts in his phone and he's always on it.

3. None of us kids could get away with anything we weren't supposed to be doing.

Let me tell ya, dad finds out everything through the grapevine.

4. He's always out helping someone.

That phone call that I talked about? Yeah, it was probably someone asking for his help working on a car or building a house or something, and he's got a big heart so he always helps the most he can.

5. Dad always knows when something important is going on.

Such as parade start times, who got into a car accident, what time the fireworks start, whose house is on fire, etc.

6. We always have to plan things with an hour or so to spare.

Because he knows so many people, things come up occasionally when we can't be on time to events or dinners.

7. Skipping school? Think again.

Dad always knew. We never knew how he knew, but he did.

8. Going 100mph in a 55? Yeah, nope.

He's also super tight with the police department, so like I said, he always knows.

9. He always has someone who can help him or our family.

If one of us kids can't be there, he's got enough contacts that can help him if he needs it, like when we had help putting a new roof on the house.

10. He's got a big support system.

Dad has been through a lot. Him knowing so many people also means he has an absolutely gigantic support system, and he's got people he can count on.

Sometimes it's not so cool to have a dad who knows the whole world, but other times it's the bees knees.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
