Girls take friendship very seriously. It’s like love; when you know, you know. Friends are like family, however, there is a significant difference between a friend and a best friend. A best friend is supposed to be your partner in crime, your gossip girl, your “let's watch Netflix and eat a whole tub of ice cream” go-to, or as "Grey’s Anatomy" likes to put it, "your person." Best friends are supposed to do everything together and they never tire of each other. That's why it is so hard to deal when you have a best friend that lives in a different state.
It’s hard when you have a rough day of school, or work, or practice, and all you want to do is rush back to see your BFF and vent, but you can’t unless you want to pay for a plane ticket home. So instead of being able to see them whenever you want (which is all the time), a plethora of text messages have to suffice.
So while everyone else can simply just invite their best friend over to hang out, you’re forced to send a text message, in hopes of that they will reply, but you have to deal with a time difference. And even then, texting a best friend just isn’t the same as seeing them because there’s absolutely no way you can fit every detail of your day into a text message. Especially after a hard day, you really just want a hug from your BFF. All you get, however, is a heart emoji over iMessage. On the other hand, when you have a fantastic day, and the first thing you want to do is to tell your best friend, a text message has to suffice and your excitement can't possibly translate over a short message.
Since texting just isn’t enough, we should be thankful for FaceTime. Thankfully, tools like Skype and FaceTime make the interaction between you and your best friend more personal, even though you are separated by a screen. It’s great to actually see "your person’s" face when you talk to them because it helps you feel like you're not all that far away. Sometimes you can even eat Chipotle together via FaceTime so it is like you’re in fact doing everything together. But, it's still not the same. You can fake it until you make it; but at the end of the day, all you want is to be in the same vicinity enjoying time with your go-to girl.
At times, having a best friend that lives in another state can seem like the worst thing in the world, but it has truly made me appreciate mine more. Sometimes friends may not be physically there with you, but they can still care about you just as much, or more. Distance causes your best friend to miss you and think of you a lot, wondering what you’re up to. While it is hard to be apart from your other half and to experience life far away from each other, your best friend is still your best friend.
Whether you met this person at a camp and are from different states, or you grew up together, but one of you moved away, you know that when you see your BFF again, it will be like absolutely nothing has changed. You’ll talk to them like you never left, and it'll feel like your friendship never skipped a beat. You learn that no matter the distance, that person will always be there for you both in the bad times and in the good times.
