What Life Is All About

It's the little things that matter the most.

What Life Is All About
Krystal Black

As I am only (although it feels like I should be saying already) 18 years-old, there are some things that I thought that I would have figured out by now. I thought that I would have figured out what I want out of life, or maybe I would have figured out that studying should come before Netflix marathons (some things will never change). One thing that I think that I've already known and seen on signs throughout houses is the saying "it's the little things in life that matter the most." Unfortunately, it has taken me quite some time to fully realize the depth behind this saying.

With the start of 2017 I've been presented with multiple opportunities that most people would not necessarily look at and think to use the word "opportunities" when describing. These opportunities are what brought me to my revelation.

It was when my best friend was able to visit me, and my college friends showed him what it's like to be friends with the people you also call your neighbors. We made breakfast and spent the morning all together, and we drove out of town to find some trails to check out just to make the most of our day.

It's when my roommate and I took a walk on a nice night, taking in the abnormal February warmth. We talked until we had nothing to say and laughed while we almost tripped on the railroad tracks.

It's when my other roommate and I dropped everything to go see my favorite artist in concert. We sang our hearts out and danced like we were the only two in a sea of red, white, and blue loving country fans.

It's when my other best friend asked if I wanted to drive to the lakeshore just for something to do. We ended up on the beach in the freezing cold, walking the frozen pier with waves crashing on us, swinging on the beach, and shopping in town on a day that would have otherwise been another day on the couch.

It's all these little things that turned into something much more that made me realize how great life is.

It's about laughing until your stomach hurts and you're crying tears of happiness. It's about listening to your friends when they're sad and being there for them. It's about sitting in a parked car, jamming with your friends because your song came on. It's about driving down backroads at 2 a.m. while screaming the lyrics to that throwback song that you haven't heard in forever. It's about taking long walks, pouring your heart out to the ones you love on a warm summer night. It's about admiring the waves as they hit the shore during a sunset and wondering how life could get any better. It's about driving out of town to throw up a hammock and listen to music with a group of people. Life is all about anything and everything that makes you happy.

It truly is the little things in life that matter the most, and if we don't stop to take them all in we might miss our chance to experience life.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
