What I Learned In Greek Life So Far

I have only been in Greek Life for a year.

What I Learned In Greek Life So Far
Morgan McCarthy

I have been involved with Greek Life for a year now. I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made since coming to college. I really never pictured myself to be one involved with Greek Life. Life never goes the way we plan it, no matter how much time we put into creating a schedule.

I have learned a lot over the last year. I know that a year is a short time to be part of something, but at the same time, life moves extremely fast. This past year has gone by in the blink of an eye. I never thought that it would move so fast and have more time to take in all the different experiences.

Being part of Greek Life has taught me many lessons that apply to many parts of my life that are not just about Greek Life. I know that I can carry these lessons with me for the rest of my life. I know what type of leader I should be. I know that it is completely fine to not have all the answers. I know that it is normal to say no to something that may make me overwhelmed.

I have made some of my best friends because of Greek Life. Greek Life is so much more than what people see in the news. It is NOT about hazing. It is NOT about being exclusive. It is NOT a bunch of ditzy rich kids. It is NOT the hashtags #TFM (total frat move) or #TSM (total sorority move). We are about helping people with our philanthropies.

Greek Life helps people. We all have to maintain a certain grade point average to be involved with some of the events that are put on for us. I know a lot of people who pay their own way through college as well as their dues. We are a group of people who have taken a lot of heat because sometimes, people in Greek Life do not make the best decisions. We are all human.

I have learned that I will be judged for being in a sorority because of the stereotypes, but I choose to embrace it because it is not something I am ashamed of. My chapter, as well as the other chapters on my campus, raise a lot of money each year to help our philanthropies. We also go and support the other chapters.

Greek Life has taught me lessons that I know I will never forget. I will always be able to take what I have learned and apply it to situations later on in life. It is so much more than the stereotypes that have been placed upon us.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
