What I Learned In 2016

A lot happens in a year.

What I Learned In 2016
Olivia Wabbe

As 2016 comes to a close, I can't help but reflect on all that has happened, and all that I have learned. It's crazy how much changes in a year. I look back and realize that who I spent my time with at the beginning of the year, I don't at the end. I started the year in one state, and ended it in another. As I grow, I continue to learn, and a whole year makes all the difference. Here is what I took away from 2016.

It is okay to rid your life of toxic people.

There will be toxic people in your life. I once read a quote on Tumblr that said, "If somebody makes you feel more blue than they do golden, it’s time to let them go, no matter the memories you made with them. Memories last, love doesn’t." I think there is so much truth to that.

Don't forget to put yourself first sometimes.

I myself am a people pleaser, and that often results in putting me second regardless. Although I love to be generous, it is okay to be selfish sometimes for the stake of your happiness.

People leave.

Who I was friends with at the beginning of 2016, I'm not at the end. Although I miss them, the people I am surrounded by now are some of the greatest people that I have ever known.

If you like it, wear it.

I am so sick of people being judgmental of others based on what they wear. There is a reason for every outfit, and a reason for every clothing piece. Who cares what anyone else thinks if you yourself like it.

Stand out.

Who cares if something is a little different than everything else. Stop hesitating. My purple hair and black lipstick makes me happy.

Forgive.

Sometimes it is best to let things go simply because they are heavy. Stop carrying that weight on your shoulders.

It's impossible to please everyone.

No matter how hard you try. It's okay, it's not your fault.

Don't be afraid of getting hurt.

If you don't try, you'll never know. Heartbreak, in the end, is life experience.

Keep an open mind.

It opens you up to new perspectives and new opportunities.

Kill them with kindness.

Regardless of how someone treats you, kindness is the best medicine.

Don't give up.

There's always going to be someone ahead of you, but that doesn't mean you're not capable of doing something great. You got this.

Have high expectations for yourself.

When you expect more from yourself, you do more to achieve that. Don't sell yourself short.

Don't be afraid to ask for help.

No matter what you need help for, it's okay not to be able to do it all on your own.

Use your voice to speak out.

Don't keep quiet just because you are one person. You don't know how much your story could impact someone else. Even if you only help one person, it's worth it.

Live in the moment.

Time flies by so fast. There are so many amazing memories I wish I could relive.

Treat yourself.

Saving up money is awesome, but don't forget to treat yourself every now and then. You've worked hard, you deserve it.

Be happy.

Because who you are is awesome, and you deserve to be happy.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
