What I Learned From My Freshman Year Of College

Whether you go far away from home, stay in-state, or even go to college in your hometown - you learn a lot of life lessons during your first year of college. Senior year of High School I thought I had everything figured out, and then I stepped foot into my new school two and a half hours away from home and realized I knew a lot less about life than I had previously thought. For those who have experienced it, for those who are experiencing it, and those who will - these are the things you have/will learn from your freshman year of college!

1. You realize how much you love homemade meals

Yeah, Ramen Noodles are great until you've had them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days in a row. You never quite realize how much your mom/dad's cooking means when you don't have them there with you anymore and you're all on your own.

2. The true cost of living

Grocery shopping on a college budget like: WTH? $3.50 for some juice? And milk are you kidding me? Well, on the bright side, ramen is only like 25 cents a pack. (Please refer to 1.)

3. Student's do not care here

In comparison to high school, college students could not care any less if you wear the same shirt two days in a row, or even if you wear your pajamas to school. Instead, we high five that student. You could literally ride around from class to class on a freaking scooter and nobody will judge you or laugh at you.

4. High School did not prepare me for this

College has it's better and worse days when it comes to how hard the work is. Some days you'll wake up for your class and see you've gotten an email from your instructor saying class has been cancelled. OR on the opposing side, you'll forget your 200 point assignment was due at 11:59 and it's 12:01 - you're screwed. No convincing there.

5. This new city is actually pretty cool

As apprehensive and nervous as you are in a new city far from home, after the first little while you realize you actually care for this new place. You actually enjoy being there with your new friends or even "sisters".

Of all the things that come with college - most of them are actually really fun to experience. Going away for college taught me so much about life and these are only five of many things my freshman year of college taught me!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
