What I've learned in my first semester at ASU

A little description of a little bit of everything I've learned after my first college semester

What I've learned in my first semester at ASU

Now that the semester is coming to an end, I wanted to reminisce a bit, just about everything that I had experienced for the first time and how I think the rest of my years here in college will be like. Now that I have gone through the trials and tribulations of college classes, now that I think about it, it was not as hard as my high school teachers made it seem to be. I honestly expected the quizzes to be more complicated, I expected piles and piles of homework, which maybe would've required me to learn how to write an essay in something other than MLA format, but that wasn't the case. I will say though that I did struggle a little but I didn't think I would struggle so little. Perhaps it is because I am still only taking my general education classes, but even then they are at a university level.

I have learned that the exam reviews actually help. I only went to two this semester I think, but they ended up being really helpful. I liked it because even though the classes themselves are large, not so many people go to the reviews which gives you an advantage for one-on-one questions and engagement with either the instructor or the IA. The reviews were helpful when I wasn't confident on a topic or when I needed reassuring.

Another thing I have l learned so far it that making your own schedule kind of sucks. I remember in high school when I didn't like my schedule I would get mad and storm the counselor's office to force them to change it. Now that the tables have turned and I have the power to choose my own classes is the hardest things ever. It's hard because you don't know if a class is too early, if it's offered in class or online or on another campus, or if you have any days off for work and leisure time.

I guess you can say that I did not like taking online classes, but that would be too nice. I seriously hated my online classes. Not to bash online classes or anything but take it from me, a kid who is great at procrastinating, they are the worst. They're so bad because since you are your own teacher, you can push off homework and assignments until before the due date. You have the power for everything in an online class. I'm also a visual learner so maybe I work better when I can the teacher or how to do something in person.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.
