What it's Really Like to Be in a Sorority
Kendra Nicolois

Dear potential sorority girls,

Yes, I am in a sorority. Many others who read this may also be in one! In high school, I always told myself I would never be in one and that's probably because I heard all of the rumors of what it was like to be apart of a sorority. There are so many different ideas of what it's like to be in a sorority. I know I can't speak for all sororities but I can speak for the one I'm in and I hope this will clear a few things up.

1. First things first, we are NOT a cult.

No matter how many crazy stories you here, we do not drink the blood of our sisters pass and we do not torture people to join our group. If you were meant to be in a sorority you will know when you first meet the girls.

2. We do not only accept girls for how cute they dress or how great their hair is.

Of course it's awesome for the girls who are born drop dead gorgeous and have hair that people would kill for. However, a sorority is not solely based off of looks. We want girls who withhold our values and girls who are role models to others.

3. We do not party every night, like some of the sororities on TV shows.

Our sorority is extremely fun and we do a lot of things together. However, you do not need to have alcohol to have fun. This is one of the most common misconceptions with a sorority. We have many sisterhood events and we are very philanthropic.

4. We are not all "dumb blondes".

Many of my sisters, including myself have made the Dean's List multiple times and some of my sisters have almost perfect GPA's. We all take school very seriously and we all work hard to keep up our grades.

5. We do not pay for our friends.

Yes, we do have to pay for certain things but I can tell you that we do not buy our sisters. The friendships and bonds I have made since joining my sorority are priceless.

6. We are actually really nice girls.

A common error is that all sorority girls are stuck up. For the majority of the sisters I know we are well-rounded individuals with great personalities and welcoming smiles.

7. We are very involved with our school.

Between fundraising events and philanthropic events, we are always very busy with our school. Many of our sisters are involved in other groups on campus as well. I hold the Fundraising Chair position in my sorority and I am also the Treasurer for a group on campus called Active Minds. We do like to stay busy and even though our sorority is extremely important to us, it is not the only thing we focus on.

Being a part of a sorority is really an amazing experience. No matter what organization you are a part of, I truly suggest looking into Greek Life. I too was one of those girls in high school who swore up and down that I would never join a sorority no matter what and boy was I wrong. I promise you, you won't regret it.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
