What It's Like To Work In A Office

What It's Like To Work In A Office
Office Space

As a child I always wanted to work in a office because that is how movies and TV shows portrayed majority of the people who worked. Media made office jobs look normal and who doesn't want to be normal, right? Well I have recently became an employee at a place where I work in a cubicle and I have been blown away. I have realized that I don't care if it is normal or not. Even this past summer, I would have never thought I would work a 8-5 job, but here I am working it and I don't actually hate it.

There are a lot of great things that come along with working in a office. Majority of the time we all have the same break schedule, lunches, and get off at the same time. I personally haven't found a work bff or anything, but if I did I could only imagine how awesome it would be. Work hard, play hard. Literally. Another great and bad thing is our desks. I like the fact that we all have the same work spots. We are either in a desk, cubicle, or our own office and it's pretty interesting because majority of us are doing completely different jobs but yet we are still working in close proximity.

Just like with anything, there are many downsides. For one, we are literally sitting in the same spot and position for eight hours. Yes, we move around, but its still the same tush on the chair. I think anyone that works a desk job can absolutely agree with me. I personally take like 1-2 minute breaks and walk to the kitchen just to change out the water in my water bottle because I cannot stand to sit another minute. Maybe the numbness of my bottom will go away after working there for so long, but so far, nothing yet.

Also, another kinda sad part of the job, is the fact that we are stuck in a little cubicle by ourselves. Iv'e only had two other jobs before this one and each were completely focused on customer service, so this job has taken me a little bit to get used to. The fact that I don't have to worry about making sure I smile or sound happy is very refreshing. Lonely at times, but refreshing.

Another thing that I think a lot of office workers will agree with me is that there is nothing better than the smell of a fresh pot of coffee. It may be different at other offices but in my office we make a fresh pot around eight o'clock to get the day started. By eleven o'clock there is usually another pot being made with the random people that start to heat up food. I have a love hate relationship with eleven o'clock because I am typically not hungry by then, but once I smell the popcorn or a frozen meal with broccoli, the hunger takes over. And by three o'clock there is another pot of coffee being made so we can get ourselves through the last two hours.

Lastly, another great thing about working at a office is the food. We typically have some great people that make treats and bring them for us or the company will be nice and order food for the office. I'm honestly probably going to gain weight from the sitting down all day and eating the delicious treats they give to us. I mean come on though, I am college student. Is it even legal for me to turn down free food?!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
