What It's Like To Live By Your Own Rules

It's pretty great

What It's Like To Live By Your Own Rules

Whether it's piercing my tongue on a whim, or cutting my bangs in the bathroom, I live my life by my own rules and standards. I do not let others or their opinions dictate how I feel about myself and I do not let fear hold me back from anything I want. Being naturally wired this way is a blessing and a curse (mostly a curse in the eyes of my parents.) Living your life purely free and without inhibitions is one of the greatest and most beneficial things anyone could do for themselves. I wish more people could find it within themselves to let go of society's standards or expectations from others and live their life the way they want to, unapologetically.

Living by your own rules gives you a sense of independency and truly makes you feel like yourself. Until I came to college, I had never experienced this type of lifestyle. I had always followed the path laid out for me by others, even though I internally questioned everything. Coming to college and being ultimately my own guide changed a lot for me, not only how I act but also the methods in which I think. I enjoy being able to think for myself and make my own decisions without worry or stress of what others will say or think about me. It is my life and I live it the way I want to.

Some people may say, "You don't get anything out of life if you life it for yourself," and honestly, I get everything out of life, if not more. Living life the way i want to does not equal living without regard for others. It means that ultimately, yes I do what I want but I would never jeopardize an important relationship over something inconsequential. However, I do believe if a person really cares about you something trivial will not make or break your relationship (like my parents accepting my piercings and tattoos, thanks guys love you.) If something is truly important to you, those close to you should understand and accept that. No two people have the same opinions and ideas, and that's the beauty of life.

I realize this lifestyle is not for everyone, I get it. I just wish more people would at least attempt to live life for themselves. At least once. Even though I sometimes make stupid decisions, the point is they're my decisions. They are my conscious choices and if I screw up well that is okay because screw ups are a part of life and help us learn. No one lives a perfect life no matter the method in which you live it. But that is just one of the awesome parts of life, no one is perfect and everything is a learning process. Life is truly what you make it, so one day try to make your life purely yours.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
