What It's Really Like To Live Alone

The good and the bad.

What It's Really Like To Live Alone
/www.dailymail.co.uk

When I tell people I live by myself, I usually get a reaction along the lines of "why would you do such a thing?" or "doesn't it get lonely?" To tell the truth, it does get lonely sometimes, but there's also a lot of good that's come from it. I haven't been living by myself for long, but I have already learned so much. I've learned to embrace the experience, the good and the not-so-good.

The Pros:

Human interaction is not required

When I come home from having an awful day, I don't have an inquisitive roommate bombarding me as I walk through the door.

Singing as loud as you want whenever you want

I sing in the shower, while cooking and while doing the laundry. I just sing my little heart out.

It's so easy to be lazy

Dangerously easy.

You don't have to wear clothes

Wearing pants is for the birds. I went ahead and bought a clear shower curtain while I was at it.

You only have to clean when you want.

This one doesn't apply to me because cleaning is my happiness but, if this is you, own the mess!

Decorating however you want

No judgement

Go ahead and devour that tub of Ben & Jerry's and leave that bottle of wine in the bathroom (not speaking from personal experience or anything…..), who will ever know?

No one touches your food.

The Cons:

It can be scary.

This is exactly what I look like when I hear a noise at night and realize I might actually have to put my butt-kicking skills to the test.

It can get really lonely.

Due to the fact I don't currently have an obligatory person to do everything with, I've learned to be somewhat independent and often find myself wondering:

Would it be weird if I went out to eat alone?

Would it be weird if I went to the movies alone?

Would it be weird if I went to the bar by myself?

When you do have visitors, you never want them to go

Don't cry, don't cry, DO NOT CRY.

Learning how to adult

And miserably failing at it.

You all of a sudden have a lot of responsibility

Passed up buying a new pair of shoes last week so I could pay my utility bill...yay.

Cooking for one

Still haven't got the hang of cooking for one, so every time I whip something up, I have enough to feed an army.

Learning how to be independent

Opening containers, zipping up dresses, putting on jewelry, the struggle is real, y'all.

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
