What It's Like To Be An Aunt

When I was 12 my oldest sister had a baby boy. Eight years later my oldest sister has three kids, two boys and one girl, and my second oldest sister has two girls, making me an aunt of five crazy energetic kids. I love every single one of my nephews and nieces. They are fun and cool kids who are just amazed with everything in life. Throughout the years, I've taught them a few things, but they have also taught me a few things that are much more important.

I would go over in the summer to South Carolina and watch my nephews and nieces. Yes, sometimes they get into fights but they show each other nice brotherly sister love as well as my two nieces do here in New York. I've taught them a few things like subtraction and addition. Just a few things in life that they're gonna have to learn. But they've taught me that it's OK to act like a child. Whenever I'm with the kids I try to let loose and play crazy games that only come form their imagination. Now that they're growing up, I feel like they have opened up my imagination, and I've actually become more creative. It's OK to let your inner child let loose.

I am the type of person who likes plans. I like to be organized and easily get stressed out when things don't turn out the way I want. When I spend time with the kids, it's crazy but they teach me to go with the flow. Not everything has to be planned out. They taught me that whenever I am feeling stressed, I just need to breathe and let things go. I am a person who likes control. I get annoyed when I don't have control. But when I'm with the kids, I don't have control over the way they act. I've learned that I don't have control over everything in my life, and that's OK. I don't have to be so hard on myself for not controlling my test grades or my paper report. If I didn't do well on a test, it's OK. I know I will do better next time.

My nephews and nieces have been one of the best things to happen in my life. They all have their own personalities but they are also the same. They are crazy, energetic, nice, loving, rambunctious little human beings. Honestly if they weren't here, I don't know if I would be the same person I am today. I am so thankful for everything that they have taught me and I am so thankful to have them in my life.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
