My faith is a major part of who I am and what I strive for in life. When I tell people about myself and why I choose a certain lifestyle, it's hard not to talk about it. Throughout my college years thus far, I've grown a lot both spiritually and mentally. At first, I was a little intimidated by the idea of going to a big university as a follower of Christ. I had heard stories of what the campus life was like and how different it would be. I was nervous, but God called me to a place where He knew I would grow and fulfill my purpose.
Being a Christian in college can be challenging. Students are exposed to a lot of things and try to explore different activities. They are introduced to new perspectives and different people. Their beliefs may be opposed or tested. New classes and workloads can cause stress and anxiety. In this new transition, a lot of change happens. Change can be a good thing, but it's important to remember your roots, core values, beliefs. One thing that I've learned when facing challenges is that God is always by our side and He will equip us for what He has called us too.
Christian college students can face prejudice and discrimination because of their beliefs. Some people get uncomfortable when I tell them I'm a Christian. Some people may laugh at our beliefs or the God that we believe in. Some people are openly against Christians or assume I fit a certain stereotype when it isn't true. This is another challenge, one that we are not fighting alone. In fact, this has been a challenge since Biblical times. With this challenge, I have to remember to be strong in my faith and to use my voice to speak truth and wisdom.
As a Christian in college, I am involved in campus ministry and church. This was really important to me from the very beginning. I knew I needed to get plugged into church and be a part of a group that would help keep me accountable and help me to grow spiritually. I can honestly say that Wesley has been one of the highlights of my college experience. As a Freshman, I was a part of Freshley and a freshmen small group, and now I'm a part of discipleship and I attend the Wesley services. Getting involved in campus ministry not only helped me to grow in my faith, but also encouraged me to get outside of my comfort zone and make connections with other believers.
Lastly, I like to view my place on campus as an opportunity or a chance. No matter who someone is or what they believe, it is my goal to spread light and love to others. By my words and actions, I hope to have a positive impact and inspire change. My university is massive, but the smallest act of kindness or word of truth is just enough of a spark to make a big difference.
