Like many others, I ended up going back home for spring break and I got a lot of sleep with a little fun as well. Back at home I have four younger brothers and as I was spending some of my time with them, I thought about my memories with them and what it is like living with nothing but other guys for so much of your life. My mom would always say that she would never adopt a girl now because she wouldn’t know what to do with one. For me, growing up with my younger brothers meant competing with one another non-stop. We’d fight to see who could do the best at anything. Sometimes it was doing chores, sometimes it was playing Magic the Gathering and see who had the best deck. We’d always fight with each other, but it never usually devolved into actual fighting and always resulted into play fighting.
Growing up with my younger brothers were days where we’d have a big dinner almost every night. We’d help our mom prepare dinner and set the dishware as well. Our dinners were a time for everyone to spend time with one another while also enjoying the talks we’d have. It’s a time for us to reminisce about some old memories and plan to make some new ones.
Growing up with my younger brothers were days filled where we would plan days to watch the newest episode of a television series or watch a movie together. We’d make popcorn (and other snacks if needed), get into something comfortable and then watch it. I had a library card for some time while I was younger and would rent movies so we’d have some new things to watch together.
Growing up with my younger brothers also meant being so much more for them, so they would have a male role model to look up to. My father isn’t much, but it doesn’t mean that I can’t be something for them. Every time that I come back home we all talk about the newest things going on and listen to new music as well. The funniest thing for me is that whenever I tell them about a new song I’m listening to, the next time I come over I find that they are listening to that song almost every day. We also delegate chores and try to help each other out (although my three younger brothers are too lazy to clean, so it’s just me and the second oldest to clean).
For me a great deal of my life is defined by my family and the time I’ve spent with my younger brothers. I always enjoy coming back home and would’ve loved to stay longer, but I also know that I can’t stay at home because I need to make something of my life here at W&J. Now as my week comes to close and with classes starting soon, I look towards the prospect of me coming over for holidays, and return, no longer the boy I once was, but as a man and can see my own brothers grow up with time. I hope everyone had fun on break and enjoyed the time off. Have a safe trip back to the campus and a good day!
