What It's Like Having Two Places To Call Home

There's nothing like it.

What It's Like Having Two Places To Call Home
Sandra Cross

Home is where the heart is, and I personally believe that this saying could not be more true. Home is where you feel comfortable, where you feel welcome. It is a place where you can confide in the people around you. Home is that “Ugh! I am home and can finally crawl into my bed!” kind of feeling (you know what I am talking about). Luckily, I have not only been blessed with one place I am able to call home but I have been blessed with two. I was born in Germany and raised in The South and my family lives in two different continents.

I have a home in Daphne, Alabama and a home in Bad Staffelstein, Germany. I am just as close to the family in Germany as I am to the family I have here in the U.S. The only difference is that I am not as capable of seeing my family in Germany than I am the family I have here. Fortunately, I have had multiple opportunities to visit my family in Germany. I love traveling in general, so being able to visit family in a foreign country makes it even more exciting. The distance also creates a strong bond between my German family and I.

Many people dream of being able to travel to Europe and it will always be a dream of mine to travel the world, but having family in Germany allows me to experience it in a different way. Not only am I able to site see and take part in the cultural activities but I am able to create and form strong friendships with the friends and family I have residing in Germany. I am able to speak with the people in their language and it makes me feel like I truly belong there. It feels like I have two lives in a way; a wonderful family in both continents and a great group of loving, adventurous friends to go along with both.

For many people, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas are generally spent with the entire family but unfortunately I am not able to be in two places at once. Phone calls are made to wish the one half “Happy Easter,” “Happy Thanksgiving” or “Merry Christmas” and then those holidays are celebrated with the other half. It’s very different because we do not have a set tradition on the plans we make for the holidays every year. Sometimes we go here, sometimes we go there.

But one thing I know is certain, I truly could not be more grateful for my two homes. I love all of my family dearly and it is a heaping blessing to be able to have so many connections to my family everywhere! It is interesting having two homes but I would never wish for anything else. If you have family in another country, take advantage of the opportunities that could arise and most definitely take advantage of the time you have to spend time with them. Overall, I share the equal love between both sides of the fam-jam!

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
