When we are in high school, it’s really hard for us to know what we want to do at such a young age. I didn’t officially apply to any colleges until halfway through my senior year. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or if I even wanted to go to college at all. Once I had decided that I could make a career out of doing something that actually interested me, I knew I was going to be on the path to success.
All my life, I had grown up listening to Boston’s no. 1 hit music station, Kiss 108. The station is right in the same city I grew up in and they just so happened to play my favorite music. Never did I imagine that one day I would get the chance to actually work for my favorite radio station.
Once I started school at Curry College, I knew right away that making the decision to be a communication major was going to the one of the best decisions I could make for myself. I wasn’t quite sure exactly what direction I wanted to head in just yet, but I knew one thing was certain, and that was to explore my options until I found one that best fit me. There are so many concentrations within the communication field that the opportunities are endless. But, I knew that working in this field was going to be the perfect fit for me no matter what. I had different courses in mind that I knew I wanted to take, and one of them in particular was radio. I was set on working for the Curry College radio station and hopefully landing myself an internship with a real radio station.
One thing that I made a particular goal of mine, was getting an internship as soon as I possibly could. I knew that my school had an amazing program: getting kids right into the internships that fit them best. They have all sorts of connections to major radio stations and television companies that fit right into my major. When I found out that I could potentially intern at Kiss 108, I let nothing get in my way of getting hired.
When I finally found out that I had been chosen to intern for the company starting spring of 2015, I could not have been more thrilled. I knew right then and there that someday, I would hopefully go on to some big things, and that hopefully this was just the first of many amazing opportunities to come.
Actually interning for the company was a very exciting experience. Yes, there was a lot of hard work involved and I learned a lot over the course of my first semester with the company, but there were also a lot of fun opportunities that came along with interning there. From meeting celebrities, to working events such as major concerts in the city of Boston, this “job” didn’t even feel like work to me and was something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life.
I also managed to stay two additional semesters with the company, having worked a total of three semesters with iHeartMedia Boston - Kiss 108 from the spring of 2015 to the spring of 2016. The people there are really helpful and love their job. They really taught me a lot about the field and were helpful in guiding me throughout my time with the company. You can really tell just how passionate these people are about working there.
I learned so much over the year and a half I had with my favorite radio station and I hope one day I will be fortunate enough to actually work there myself. I left there having worked two concerts for the company, and actually getting the chance to be on the radio, live on the air. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to be live on the air across the city of the Boston. Yes, the internship consisted of waking up at very early hours of the morning, and it came along with a lot of hard work and dedication, but if I could go back and do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.
