What It Means to Get Fit

Getting fit isn't about the number on the scale, it's how you feel about yourself.

One of the things I've always been bullied about growing up was my weight. I was called fat by a family member repeatedly, and was called fat or lard ass in middle and high school. This has haunted me for a while. I used to do yoga and dance in early high school, but I fell off the wagon because I got too busy with my activities. I've felt guilty for quitting these forms of exercise, and have wanted to get back into it.

Recently, my boyfriend and I decided that we need to get in better shape. It was more so my idea, but he agreed to do it with me. I've worked out plenty of times before, but rarely with other people. The only time I worked out in a group was in high school P.E. Even then, I would go off and do my own thing as far as working out. I'm so happy to have someone to work out with me. It's easier when you do it with someone. He's even thanked me for being his motivation, and I'm so glad I can do that for him.

A couple of nights ago, we went to Academy after speech practice. It was late, so there weren't many people in the store. We bought some new workout gear. To help with motivation, get cute and colorful workout clothes. Seeing the bright colors and fun designs will get you excited. It always feels great to wear new clothes and show them off. Some work out gear is super expensive. For that, look in the clearance area and see what you can find. Also, try finding a cheaper brand. For example, if you can't afford Nike, try BCG. I got about $60 worth of clothes from the clearance rack, which equaled about 7 clothing items. You don't have to splurge too much for fitness...unless you're buying a treadmill or some other work out machine. Do what you can afford.

Getting fit isn't about the number on the scale. It is how you feel about yourself. I am doing this because I am sick of feeling self conscious about my body. I can't wait to continue my fitness journey. I know and accept what my body type is, so I know that I'll never be stick skinny. Everyone carries their weight differently, so it's important to learn about your body type, how to dress it, and how to work any problem areas you may have. Some people have a fast metabolism, and some have a slower one. Some might be able to eat whatever they want in moderation, but some have to make lifestyle changes and eat a totally different menu of food in order to stay healthy. I am trying to include more fruits into my diet, but still eat some of the normal foods I eat...but in moderation. I'm doing my best to eat smaller portions of junk food and larger portions of healthier food. It all depends on you and your body's needs for what you need to do in order to get and/or stay fit. Don't feel like you have to perform to certain standards. Just because the girl next to you in your yoga class can do hand stands doesn't mean you have to. I certainly can't do it, but I'd like to eventually learn how to do it. If someone can run a mile in less time than you, it doesn't mean anything. We are all on different fitness paths, so quit shaming each other for it. Instead, build each other up. We are all in this together.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
