What It Means To Be A Xavier Musketeer

For every college student there is something about their university or college that resonates with them and is often times the reason why they chose the school they did. With this being said, every college and university is unique in their own ways. These unique qualities could range anywhere from the types of academics the school prides itself on, the sports that bring everyone together, values that the school wants their students to possess, or the types of activities and clubs it provides its students. Every student is proud of their school and thinks it is the best school out of them all. When a student says this it is 100 percent true because it is the best school for them. Colleges and universities are not designed to compete against each other, they are designed to help select types of people achieve their goals in higher education not only by an education standard point, but also in the values their students hold.

This is what it means to be a Xavier Musketeer.

A common phrase you will hear in all aspects of life on Xavier’s campus is that we are “All for One and One for All”. As a Musketeer you don’t see people by their year on campus, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other labels that might be placed on a person. It’s a place where we learn together, grow together, and serve together. When you become a “Muskie” you become a part of a family that is there to support you and help you become the best person that you were meant to be. You become friends with the most diverse array of people that will be there for you no matter what. As a Xavier Musketeer we are “All for One and One for All” far beyond graduation day.

It is great to receive an education that gets you in and out as fast as possible in order to make the most amount of money they can. However, a Musketeer values more than just simply education and wants to be challenge in things far beyond their degree. We consider and challenge things like religion, social standards, rules and laws, and philosophical opinions. A Musketeer is grateful for the opportunities to experience more than just what they have been exposed to in the past. We challenge ourselves to go beyond our own little comfort zone to become comfortable with the uncomfortable.

“Men and Women for and with Others” is something that every Musketeer strives to become. We know that we are not the only people in this world and that there is more than just Xavier out there. A Musketeer is someone who know that simply fixing a problem for a person is not enough, its taking that extra step and doing it alongside them. We are the students who gather up at 8:30 in the morning to go out for 3 hours and make a difference in the lives of those beyond Xavier’s campus. A Musketeer is someone who is not just there for a person in need, but with them every step of the way. We see the need in the world and want to do something about it. As Musketeers we will succeed in changing the world together.

We are the Xavier Musketeers.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
