I take pride in the fact that I love working. Maybe it’s my job, maybe it’s the independence I have or maybe it’s the strong desire to succeed, but I do not mind going into work every day and doing something that changes a life.
It took me until the end of my freshman year to realize that I started off in a major that was honestly pretty boring to me. There was no creativity involved and I am going to be truthful for a minute… numbers are NOT my thing unless we are talking about the number of words in a press release or the number of attendees at a Super Bowl game. I finally switched my major to Sports PR/Journalism which led me to a path that I absolutely love. I will work my hardest to succeed and work to the top of my profession. With this being said, I believe that my hard work will put me on the same level as any male. And am I afraid to have a male boss? Absolutely not. That’s where a section of the world got it wrong.
feminism
[fem-uh-niz-uh m]
noun
- the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
Feminism has turned into such a taboo, monster of a word. Women in my generation have taken this and turned it into a word to make the world a female dominant society. The meaning of feminism is the equality of men and women. I agree that if a woman has the same strengths in a resume as a man, that they both have the same opportunity for the job position. I am sick of hearing women complain that they deserve a job because it’s time for a woman to be on the same level playing field. In reality, NO woman is entitled to anything just because they have a pair of boobs. Both men and woman should be able to obtain the same job and feminism is about pure equality. Whether a man wants to be a nurse or hairdresser while a woman wants to be a mechanic or an NFL referee. A strong resume, good communication, meaningful networking and education are the things that will set you up for success.
I am currently in the middle of a book called #GIRLBOSS and have found it to be extremely relatable. Sophia Amoruso, Founder and Executive chairman of NastyGal, wrote this book to show that woman can do anything and everything they want to do.
One quote:
“#GIRLBOSS is a feminist book, and Nasty Gal is a feminist company in the sense that I encourage you, as a girl, to be who you want and do what you want. But I’m not here calling us “womyn” and blaming men for any of my struggles along the way”.
Growing up as a girl can be intimidating. When I was younger I grew up with all boys for neighbors so I had to learn to tough everything out. I carry it into my life today, never letting anyone get in my way of my crazy dreams.
Another quote from Sophia’s book, “Instead of sitting around and talking about how much I care, I’m going to kick ass and prove it”.
Stop worrying about it all and just go live your life, doing what you love. Hard work trumps luck any day of the week. Both men and women should be able to walk into an interview knowing that they have just as much opportunity as the opposite sex. This goes for any color, race or religion too. Do not ever feel nervous about applying for a job just because you feel any different than the person next to you. This topic should no longer be up for discussion and I am in love with the fact that in 2016, it is becoming a thing of the past. Take a look at all the women that are now working for ESPN… I LOVE IT. Granted that is one of my dream jobs, and Jessica Mendoza is one of my heroes as a lead baseball analyst but it is awesome to see a path for me too.
Your dreams should scare you, not because someone is going to get in the way, but because they are almost TOO exciting.
Go. Live.
