What It Means To Be A Brother Of Kappa Kappa Psi
Lauren Hollie Gipson

Kappa Kappa Psi is a national band fraternity that men and women can join. With members all over the country, someone is bound to run into a brother from another chapter. But a brotherhood is more than going to chapter and buying cool gear. A brotherhood is a special bond through music and service

"... that music is a universal language and truly the greatest of the arts..."

Brotherhood means being supportive, whether it being supportive of other brothers, the brothers of Phi Mu Alpha, the sisters of Tau Beta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Iota, the community and members of marching bands all over the country. Having the support from brothers in the chapter and in other chapters brings a certain togetherness. This is one of the things that makes our brotherhood strong. This creates a bond that is like no other.

Brotherhood is serving those in the area and beyond. We help bands in the area who needs instruments or playing with smaller high schools. We help our own bands become greater. We serve the students, the faculty, the community, and we love it. Service brings out the greatness in people and being surrounded by brothers who love to serve makes being in the brotherhood even more awesome.

Brotherhood means that you don't just know each other's names, but their stories and their character. Brothers have met their best friends in and out of their chapter. The chapters and the people in them bond and grow closer together with each passing week through service, music, events, and so on. Brothers growing closer together is something to be cherished and lasts a lifetime.

Brotherhood means acceptance. Musicians come in all kinds of forms. Being a brother is showing who you truly are while watching yourself and other brothers grow. No matter who you are, where you came from, and whether you are a music major or not, you were meant to be here. You are meant to support and be supported. We are all here for the same propose.

Brotherhood means reaching out. Getting to know other chapters and the individuals in that chapter, and working with them while doing what we all love is something one cannot find in many other places. We help each other when we're in need, even if it's not fraternity related. We lean on each other for support. Meeting a brother that lives either out of state or out of the country shows the world one thing, and that is us reaching out and making a difference one brother at a time.

Brotherhood means all the inside jokes, special songs, chapter related memes, moose jokes and debates on whether cupcakes and muffins are the same (cough, cough Alpha), that no one else gets. We all mostly share the same humor so we get to laugh together as a family.

Brotherhood means forever. It means staying in contact years and years down the line and watching how your chapter grew over the years. It means knowing the song and hymn (okay maybe mostly, no judgment here) and having the same feeling as you did when you sang it as your last time as an active member. It may mean becoming a life member. It means knowing you still have the same support, love of service and music.

Kappa Kappa Psi isn't just a regular old brotherhood. It means much more than the letters. We strive for the highest and to serve around and beyond us. We grow as musicians and people, while getting to do what we love.

"Guide my feet through, peaceful eyes. I am a brother of KKPsi."

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
