A short story.

When Your Dreams Actually Come True

“I’m your new boss, Almond, nice to meet you. We open at 6pm, out in the back there’s an apron so you can start preparing and familiarizing yourself with the menu.” Emma was confused, he had not even asked her a question to know if she was skilled for this job and was already hiring her. As she looked around she saw Tony at the bar, he was even more perplexed than she was.

Okay this can’t be that hard. There’s only 10 things in the menu. Emma thought. Oh fuck! There’s 50 different types of beers. How the hell am I going to learn this in a day? Wait, not even a day, a couple of hours!

Emma quickly grabbed her flashcards from her purse and started writing down small facts of each beer and its name. She quizzed herself for three hours and as 6pm came close, the fear she felt of failure slowly went away.

For the first couple of hours the place was dead. A couple of men walked in but only sat at the bar and watched the game, barely anyone ordered food, what was the point thought Emma. She made her way to the bathroom reconsidering all her life choices. Was it really worth it? She thought. Then all of a sudden there was a loud bang in the door.

“Hey!! We have costumers! Get your butt out of there and go do your job.” Said Almond.

Emma quickly opened the door and fixed her eyeliner. She made her way to a tiny table in the back of the bar.

“What can I get you?” said Emma. But the moment she made eye contact with the person in front of her, her knees got weak, she had never seen such a beautiful woman in her life. Dark hair, porcelain skin and really red luscious lips.

“Can I have a glass of red wine and a Caesar salad please? There’s nothing I can eat in this place god.” Said the woman. “I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for Connor.”

Emma didn’t say anything, she quickly ran to the kitchen and poured the glass of wine, even her hands were shaking. What was happening to her? Why was this woman making her feel so nervous?

“Here you go. Your salad will be right up!”

“Wait! Oh my, YOU are gorgeous girl. How old are you?” What is happening Emma said to herself, this day can’t get any weirder.

“I’m 22.” Said Emma

“Perfect! Sit sit please. Have dinner with us, or with me, Connor is always late.”

“I’m sorry, I’m working, I don’t think my boss will allow it.”

“Nonsense, I’ll pay for everyone’s dinner tonight if he lets you sit down with me.”

The mysterious woman pulled Emma and sat her down. Emma had no idea what was going on. She studied the lady discreetly, she seemed like she had money, she looked way to put together to be in this side of town too.

“So tell me, have you ever thought of acting?”

Emma froze, this could not be happening, she had only been in LA for two days and someone had already approached her?

“Yeah… Why do you ask?” She fidgeted with her sleeves nervously.

“Well, I’m currently in the look-out for an actress. Connor, the guy who is not showing up, is the co-lead of this movie I’m producing. But I cannot seem to find the right girl to play Cher.” Again, what the hell is happening Emma thought.

“Could you give me your contact information and come in for an audition? All you have to do is read a couple of lines.” She said. “Oh and my name is Anna, Anna Heckerling.”

“What’s the name of the movie again?”

“Clueless.”

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
