What is it like to see your younger brother grow up?
One word. Scary.
Luckily for me, my brother is my best friend. He never catches a break. When we were younger, I used to be that sister that ran onto the playing field just to hug him goodbye. You're thinking "No way!" Actually, yes way.
When I went off to college for the first time, everything changed. I didn't realize that when I was at college, life at home continued. One day I decided to call my little brother, or should I say not so little brother. I was shocked with who answered the phone. Being so unfamiliar with his voice, I almost asked who it was. I couldn't believe it, my little brother was growing up so fast! The crazy part was, it had only been a week. Yeah, a week! I was used to talking to him every day that this was such a sudden change, I couldn't handle it. I was shocked. I couldn't believe how much he changed from such a short amount of time.
Still in the state of shock, I decided to take a trip home to visit. When I saw him I was more shocked than before. I hugged him real tight and told him that I missed him; feeling like a mother not having seen her baby for a bit and returning back only to see a grown teenager. Now instead of looking down at him...I all of a sudden was looking at him in the eye. He was my height! It was such a sad, but happy moment.
As we sat at dinner, I thought about how fast kids grow up. We don't notice it as much if we are with them for long periods of time, but when we are away, we can see the drastic changes.
Hold on to the young years because they will be gone in a blink of an eye.
Even though my little brother may be taller than me now, he will always be my little brother. Nothing can change that.
Love you best friend.
Keep smiling.
