Hawaii is a paradise full of history, nature, and culture that shouldn’t be missed.
That’s why, on a Sunday afternoon, I made the last second decision to join my family in a trip to Oahu, Hawaii – the flight left on the following Wednesday afternoon.
The first thing you’ll notice is that there is no Wi-Fi connection over the Pacific Ocean; however, when Delta’s provided you with both Captain America: Civil War and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, one can hardly complain.
After our six and a half hour flight (from the layover point in Salt Lake City), we were greeted with sights of the island. My initial thought?
Damn, that's some blue water.
Soon, we'd made our way from the Honolulu International Airport, and we were on our way across the island to the town which we'd be staying in: Kailua.
For those who don't know, because I certainly didn't, though Kailua is considered a town to the locals, she's actually made up of a staggering population: almost 40,000.
After getting adjusted, the first stop was Kailua Beach Park. There we saw a beautiful - if cloudy - sunrise.
Soon after, we got to try a Hawaiian twist on the original McGriddle, which was actually quite tasty. Along with the normal ingredients, Spam is a huge thing here in Hawaii, and so naturally, it was on the McGriddle as well. Included along with that was a nice portion of rice.
We then made our way to the Valley of the Temples, taking a scenic detour along the way.
Though it may seem a bit morbid, the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park - a cemetery, essentially - is absolutely beautiful with a fully functioning Buddhist temple. Upon entering the temple, one had to remove their shoes and remain quiet to show their respects to those who were using the temple as a place of worship.
After another day of traveling, around the island, we called it a night. The next morning, we woke early to visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial Park, and though we're still currently experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer, I do have to say that this experience was priceless, and by far my favorite that I've had so far here on Oahu.
First, we boarded the USS Bowfin; the Bowfin was a fleet attack submarine, and she launched a year to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, the Bowfin served the United States well during WWII. (Protip: If you're over six foot tall, be prepared to have trouble navigating through her quarters - the openings to each room are quite small, and get smaller as one travels inward.)
Next, we watched a heartwrenching mini-documentary about the historic events that took place in Pearl Harbor On December the 7th before boarding the USS Arizona Memorial, narrated by none other than Jamie Lee Curtis herself.
So far, the entire trip and experience has been humbling. Stay tuned to learn more about my advetures in paradise!
