Within one day, millions of women stood in solidarity, and rocked the globe with their peaceful protest against the conservative ideals circulating in the cabinet that could drastically effect their lives. We haven't seen that kind of solidarity in the American masses, or even in the world, for a very long time.
The women brought many celebrity and community leader's to speak, including Ashley Judd, Scarlett Johannson, and many more. And this wasn't just a march that was limited to liberal or democratic women. People from every walk of life joined in with the women to unite against what many fear to be a drastic step backwards in American history. But what specifically are they protesting?
They fought for dignity and respect to become stronger pillars in American society, and across the world because, let us not forgot, the actions of the American president represent the American people as a whole to the world, and those actions also have an effect on the world. It is no secret President Trump has mocked the disabled, stereotyped Muslim and Latino people, bragged about sexual assault, and has expressed a strong opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade and to cut Planned Parenthood funding. His VP Mike Pence has also made it abundantly clear that he sees being gay as a disease that can be cured with electric shock. Pence also, in his cut to Indiana Planned Parenthood funding, is responsible for the outbreak of HIV in Indiana. Trump's cabinet is also concerning, particularly his pick for Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, who has expressed wanting to cut money on education, both in schools and in scholarships.
Let's be clear: none of those ideas are good for society. However, Trump is president irregardless. It can only be hoped that he'll protect everyone under his adminstration.
We cannot go back to the days where women were dying rapidly due to coat hanger/ back alley abortions. We cannot go back to a time where "gay" was synonymous with "sick." We cannot go back and continue this notion that the only way to be patriotic, is to be white.
Moving forward into this presidency, we can't allow the cutting in education. We can't allow that many people to go without health insurance again. We can no longer pretend that climate change isn't happening. We can no longer allow sexual assault to be blamed on the victim, to go unpunished. We as a people, can not support the racial stereotyping of blacks and Latinos as "criminals" and "illegals" We cannot afford to see enemies everywhere we turn. As a country, the only way to be safe, to be respectable, to be united, is to be inclusive.
The Women's March stood for all tihs, and made it abundantly clear that we the people do have power, and that if one persons rights are not secure, the no one's is.
