What Is SO Wrong With Sororities?

It's time to debunk the stereotype.

Sororities get a bad rep. People think of the airhead girls they see in movies who live to party and get stupid drunk. However, that’s not the case at all. Sororities give you a group of girls who lift you up. You feel so motivated to do good in the world, because every which way you look, another one of your sisters is doing something great.

They prepare us for careers and life in general. We have rules regarding our social medias, how we act in public, grades, volunteering, etc. The teach us how to present ourselves the correct way. We have a certain GPA we must uphold. We have so many rules that totally debunk your incorrect stereotype on us, right off the bat.

Sororities teach young college girls to do things other than going out and partying. We learn so many leadership skills, and continuously try to make ourselves better in hopes of somebody getting an elected leadership executive position. We have older girls to mentor us in the right direction and to help us get more involved. And let’s not forget about our volunteering…

Sororities are literally built on giving back to the world. Every sorority has a certain cause or organization that they continuously raise money for and hold philanthropy events for. Our donations and time spent hands on make up so much of what goes to different organizations. Along with that, we are presented with countless opportunities to give back other ways, even those events which have nothing to do with our own national philanthropy. We get to give back to the local communities where we go to school, on so many different occasions. Greek kids stick together too, attending all of each other’s philanthropy events to help their causes/organizations as well.

We make connections with hundreds of other sorority girls, both active and alumni, that often times can land people incredible internships/careers. Anybody successful knows that you have to have connections, and we have them times thousands.

I’m not going to lie and say that we don’t have fun as well, but what do you think non-Greek kids are doing, sitting in their dorms on the weekends? We have rules we have to follow even when we do go out, while a lot of non-Greek kids are out there on the weekends being a total mess.

And my favorite blow to sorority girls: you call it “paying for friends.” Well, I call it paying for our 19 million dollar mansion we live in, our meal plan that is actually good food instead of a dining hall plan, the countless date parties, formals, and fun things we get to go to, while making life long friends along the way.

So go ahead and rip on sorority girls, but while I am here having the most beneficial, best time possible at college, you will just be sitting there negatively complaining about us.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
