One movement that has swept the nation in the past few years is the #MeToo movement. I can't help but ask the question; why now? Women everywhere have just started speaking up when this has been an issue for many years. This movement was originally founded in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence and help them heal. On October 15, 2017, Alyssa Milano tweeted "If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet". This sparked the attention of sexual assault not only in everyday life, but also in the workplace. Due to this, many fingers were pointed to Harvey Weinstein, a former film producer, who was charged with predatory sexual assault, rape, and criminal sexual assault landing him up to 29 years behind bars.
Harvey Weinstein was fired due to many allegations of sexual harassment in the workplace. He was one of many famous men that was accused and lost their jobs because of it. Two famous actresses, Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan were among the many who came forward with allegations against Weinstein. After multiple women came forward, the news broke that he had been harassing employees for over three decades. He would promise girls an advance in their career in return for sexual favors. Due to the issue arising through social media, many news stations reported on the issue making it known to almost everyone.
One in five women in the United States will be raped at some point in their lifetime. One in five, let that sink in. This has been an ongoing issue that plenty are not aware of. I am here to advocate for you to let your voice be heard, open your ears, and be aware. The whole world is stepping up trying to put an end to this. Many cases go unnoticed and people are left to sit there dreading the moment that they shouldn't have to remember. Around 81% of women report a significant impact in their life after being sexually assaulted including having Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many suffer in silence yet when you speak up, consequences are given to the assaulter and women are empowered. Rape is the most under-reported crime with around 63% not reported to authorities. This could mean that women are too afraid to speak up yet the #MeTooMovement has drastically changed women's perspective of coming forward.
Many victims feel as if it was their fault, like they should take the blame. This should not be the case. If there was no consent, it is NOT okay. If you or anyone you know has experienced some form of sexual assault, speak up. Just remember, you are not alone. If you or someone you know is ready to step forward and help the #MeToo movement progress, 'The Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN), organizes the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline and can be reached through 1-800-656-4673.
