Many of us have experienced the joy that pets bring into a home. For those of you that haven't, I am very sorry. You are truly missing out. There is a special kind of companionship that is unique to our furry (or otherwise nonhuman) friends.
Growing up in a home that always welcomed pets, I was raised believing them to be an integral part of any given family unit. Our dogs, cats, fish, lizard and chinchilla were my friends/family. They could be mean or annoying at times, but they were residents of a home we shared.
When it came time to leave home and live in a college setting, I definitely felt like something was missing. I began to understand and appreciate just how much of a blessing these creatures can be...
So why not bring them to college?
Pets offer unconditional love and loyalty. No matter how badly you mess up, they will forgive and forget.
You can tell them anything, and they will never share your secrets. This makes them handy when you need to vent.
People who have pets are generally healthier! They have lower risk of depression and anxiety, and are also usually more active.
Pets teach you responsibility. Their life is quite literally in your hands. You have to learn to think outside of yourself and remember that another creature is depending on you.
There's almost never a dull moment. Animals are so strange and quirky at times; they're rather entertaining. I don't believe in laughing too much.
Have you ever spent ridiculous amounts of time looking at cute animal videos just because they make you happy? If you answered no, you're probably lying. That just goes to show that pets are a huge stress reliever!
Did I mention they're cute? Gents, trust me, ladies usually dig the animals. Ladies, obviously you love them, and they make a neat addition to a home. It adds a neat personal and lively touch.
I am all for allowing pets in college housing, presumably so long as it is off-campus. On the other hand, if it is on-campus, at least small pets should be permissible! The pros outweigh the cons, in my humble opinion. I know I would greatly benefit from a few changes at least!
