What Is Going On With Facebook Censorship?

The latest in Facebook's controversial slant on news and politics.

What Is Going On With Facebook Censorship?

When will social media websites learn? Earlier this year, I wrote an article about Twitter’s new algorithm for finding content. It was a vastly unpopular idea, but the latest Facebook censorship controversy makes it looks good.

Censorship on Facebook is nothing new. Breitbart reported earlier this year about how Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of many social media giants working with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in order to fight anti-refugee sentiment. This includes removing anti-refugee and anti-immigrant posts. Whether or not you agree with the sentiment of these posts, it is still censorship. Facebook is allowed to do as it pleases, but it is censorship.

Now, we see that there is a new censorship. Facebook is working to hide the works of a new evil: right wing news pundits.

How does this work? It’s very similar to the Twitter algorithm. The algorithm analyzes what news is receiving the most likes, views, and shares. Based on this, it sets up a “trending” list. The problem is that the people who run the algorithm are not robots. They are humans, which means that they have biases and prejudices.

Some of these human “curators” do not like the right wing. Some of them, like Facebook executive Tom Stocky, are big Hillary Clinton donors. So, what do they do? Well, according to a former Facebook curator, topics and personalities would be elevated or blacklisted based on whether they favored the left or the right. In an interview with Gizmodo, the former employee gave examples of topics and people who were downplayed: “former IRS official Lois Lerner, who was accused by Republicans of inappropriately scrutinizing conservative groups; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker; popular conservative news aggregator the Drudge Report; Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL who was murdered in 2013; and former Fox News contributor Steven Crowder.” The report also talks about how they would handle news from conservative sites. “Every once in a while a Red State or conservative news source would have a story, but we would have to go and find the same story from a more neutral outlet that wasn’t as biased.”

There has been a large outcry. Everyone from Rush Limbaugh to Mr. Crowder has responded to the controversy. As of today, Facebook has reached out to top conservatives to meet and talk this out. This is clearly blowing up.

Again, Facebook can do as they please. It is their website, so they can set up what’s trending. That being said, there are two big problems. First, 63 percent of all Facebook and Twitter users say that they get their news from social media, according to a poll. This is bad because if people are getting filtered news, they may not be getting the truth. Secondly, people get paid based off of views from Facebook. If Facebook censors certain people, they are damaging these people financially. What will Facebook do to fight back and deal with this crisis? We will see.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
