What, honestly, is considered normal today for both sexes? When you really think about it, norms have been socially constructed. Having lived in the south for about twenty-two years of my life, I am of the opinion that people are more closed-minded down here than most of the world. When you look at people in more heavily populated cities, such as New York City, people, most importantly, men, dress differently. We are starting to see stereotypes for both sexes starting to fade out.
Jaden Smith has definitely been a huge advocate for social issues such as gender-neutral clothing. He has stated that his line of clothing is "gender neutral", and acceptable for any gender to wear. Although some people may question his sexuality because of his manner of dress, he does have a girlfriend and is adamant about changing the meaning of what is normal for men.
I have always loved dressing well and setting my own trends. I promise I am not one of those people who "dabbled before it was even cool." I was, however, in on some fashion trends that every other guy caught up on later. Recently, I've been thinking about getting a tote bag from one of my favorite stores since I really like the print, and it could come in handy.
Herschel Supply Company has been one of my favorite brands since I discovered them in Urban Outfitters. I have a card wallet, a backpack, a duffle bag, and another wallet by them since the quality is great. It honestly appeals to me since I have a classic, yet urban style. Regardless of gender, you could say I'm just a fashionable person in general, who cares about what I look like and how I dress. I love how bags are becoming a guy's thing now. Bigger designers are making more and more tote bags for men, and bags in general.
I feel as though Jaden is on the right track, gender neutrality needs to become a norm for everyone. I'm not a guy who will wear a dress, but I would definitely invest in a tote. Running around all the time to go to various meetings, I don't want my hands full with a tablet or laptop, a legal pad, pens, and my wallet and phone. I would definitely love to take a small tote bag with me. We as a society need to move forward since everything that is "normal" is not the norm anymore.
