In light of the Easter holiday, I thought it might be fun to look at some questions surrounding the holiday.
1. What does Easter celebrate?
Easter celebrates Jesus's resurrection on the third day and, in some Christian circles, the holiday is actually called Resurrection Day/Sunday.
2. Why do we call Resurrection Sunday 'Easter?'
Well, this is sort of similar to why we have Christmas trees. It's a pagan thing. Easter is named after Eostre, the goddess of spring and fertility.
3. Why eggs?
This one is pretty simple and, if you haven't already guessed, you'll probably kick yourself when you read this. Eggs symbolize new life and goes back to Jesus rising from the dead on the third day.
4. Why Easter baskets?
Again, it's a pagan thing. In the pagan tradition, farmers would gather their seeds during the spring equinox and put them in baskets to present to their deities. They would then pray for a fertile spring.
5. What's with the Easter Bunny?
This adorable tradition supposedly came with German immigrants in the 1700s. When they came to America, they brought the tradition of an egg-laying hare called "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws." So, it's not actually a rabbit, it's a hare, but who's keeping track? I mean, look at Bugs Bunny.
I hope you enjoyed reading these short blurbs about the holiday. Happy Easter/Resurrection Sunday.
