The perception of beauty in our society today is corrupt. Models, celebrities, magazines and social media have disturbed innocent minds on what they should think is pretty. The sad part is, whether they are doing this on purpose or not, these influences have made it out to be as if there is only one type of beauty. I find this disgusting.
There are so many different types of beauty in this world, beauty should never be narrowed down to specific characteristics. What one person can find stunning, another can think is hideous, which is completely normal. However, there are endless characteristics that can make a person attractive. Nowadays, magazines and modeling agencies tell us that beauty is tall, skinny girls that have thigh gaps and seemingly no fat on their body. Although I also find these models in the magazines gorgeous, I also truly admire thick legs and curvy bodies.
Skinny and curvy are both attractive in different ways. But because the current trend in our society focuses solely on one type of beautiful that is made out to be "flawless," the perception of beauty in the minds of our community have become distorted. This is why so many girls are developing eating disorders and becoming self conscious. Society tells us that there is only one type of pretty. Because many popular public figures and role models are narrowing down the characteristics of what is considered attractive, many people are being influenced. People seem to forget that curvy bodies are beautiful when they see a stunning picture of a super-skinny model in a magazine. Conversely, others fail to remember how attractive thin bodies are when they see a woman pulling off a sensuous, skin-tight dress with their curvy, voluptuous figure.
What is considered beautiful now was not considered beautiful 10 years ago. Trends change all the time, so everyone should stop trying to alter themselves in order to fit in with the latest style of what is considered beautiful. My question is—why do things have to be considered beautiful by society in the first place? Although cliché, everything and everyone is beautiful in their own way. I find it sad that individuals in society have been corrupted so that they can no longer see this.
