What I'll Miss Most About Fall in New England

Summer has officially ended, and we all know that Fall is approaching. Many people will start to complain about the cooler temperatures and shorter days, but this is my favorite time of year, especially when you are a New Englander like me! Unfortunately this will be my first time where I won't be able to see a New England Fall that I have grown to love over the past 20 years. Here's a list of what I'll miss from home a little extra this season:

1. Pumpkin Picking

Pumpkin picking is essential during this time of year. I still have fond memories of going to the pumpkin patch by hayride in elementary school. After picking the most perfect pumpkin, you can't wait to take it home to carve. Of course, this was always my dad's job, but I always loved designing the face. My personal favorite was our pumpkin throwing up it's own guts( my idea of course).

2. Apple Cider Donuts

My mouth is already starting to water. There's no better taste than biting into a warm donut. Your tastebuds will thank you when you bite into the crunchy outside to get to the soft middle. Be sure to enjoy this snack with a cold or hot cup of apple cider! You can't go wrong with this pair!

3. Excuse to wear flannel

Of course dressing for the colder weather is important. So here's an excuse to wear flannel ALL the time. Whether its a flannel shirt, flannel lined pants, or my personal favorite, pajamas. No one will judge you for wearing it everyday, because they'll also be wearing it.

4. Leaves changing colors

It wouldn't be Fall without the changing colors of the leaves on the trees. I love going for drives to look at the different colors of red, yellow and orange. You can enjoy the leaves, but be careful, you don't want to look like a leaf-peeper!

5. Apple picking

Another Fall activity you don't want to miss out on. To this day, picking apples in an orchard is still my favorite thing to do in the Fall. From a young age, I've loved climbing the trees to find the perfect apple. Don't forget to eat a few while picking!

6. Yummy desserts

Of course after you go apple picking you must do something with all of those apples! Why not make dessert? My personal favorite is apple crisp, but I do love a good apple pie as well!

7. Fall Sports

Whether on the sidelines cheering on your favorite team, or participating, the Fall sports season will always be my favorite. In high school I loved getting bundled up to watch a Friday night football game under the lights with my friends.

8. Trick or Treating

Everyone looks forward to the end of October because that means, Halloween, and more importantly, Trick or Treating! Although I'm a little too old now, I always loved dressing up and running around my neighborhood with friends collecting candy.

Being away from home this Fall I will defintely miss everything about this time of year. I have grown to appreciate the little things in life that I'm accustomed to having each year. For everyone back home, please take advantage of the wonderful things this season brings.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
