What and if, are two of the most innocent and simple words in the English language. However, when put together they form one of the most daunting questions in life that we all must face. If you have ever seen the movie, “Letters to Juliet,” you know the famous letter that the main character, Sophie, sent to Claire about her lost love. If you haven’t seen the movie, you can read the letter here. The letter is all about how there will always be a lingering question mark in Claire’s life if she doesn’t have the courage to listen to her heart and find him again (I highly recommend this movie if you like others such as “The Notebook” or “Love Actually”). The movie showcases how we all can get through the questions of “what if” if we face them head-on.
What if?
We all have unanswered questions and loose ends in our lives that linger over our heads. They can be from the smallest of choices to the largest decisions in our lives. What if I had gone to a different college? What if Hillary won the election over Trump? What if I never moved cities? What if unicorns were real? All these questions do it make us daydream about things that will never happen or have a very slim chance of happening. Although these daydreams seem all well and good in our heads, they aren’t actually happening. These daydreams only provide a small glimpse into a live that could have happened.
I believe that the question, “What if” is one of the scariest questions known to man. It makes us question ourselves and believe that we might have had the chance to change the way our life turned out. We must live with our choices because we cannot go back and change them. The other choices may be the “what if’s” in our lives, but it does no good to ourselves or the people around us to dwell on them. By dwelling on them, it makes us worry and question our choices and how we live our life. My advice to anyone who has a “what if” in their life would be to look forward and not worry about what could have happened. Remember you cannot change the past and you must stand behind all the choices you’ve made.
