We have all started a new job at some point, and for those of us who have worked in restaurants, it is very easy to tell who is a newbie. They seem shy and unsure, sometimes clueless, they get frazzled easily and they virtually have no idea what they are doing. If I had to speak to a new server, I'd probably tell them these few things:
1. Relax.
It is not life or death, despite what you may think based upon table thirteen having a panic attack that you forgot their oysters.
2. In case you didn't hear me the first time, RELAX.
Most people are understanding and if you let them know that this is your first time, they will hopefully take it easy on you.
3. Move your a%#!
I get that you still don't know where things are but please for the love of God, move your a#$. I have to get to my table and you're moving at the speed of chilled molasses.
4. You will make mistakes.
Nobody is perfect, I've been serving for a while and I still make mistakes but I've learned to roll with the punches. When there is an issue and one of your tables is unjustly upset, breathe, and realize that not everything is under your control.
5. Some people just suck.
In a job where we cater to the needs of others, it can be quite difficult dealing with certain people. You may have done nothing wrong but they will find a way to make you feel like you did.
Being a waitress is such a great experience and I've learned so many things from it. I honestly believe that everyone should be a part of this profession. It is challenging and rewarding at the same time. You just have to remember to relax, breathe, and have fun.
