What "How I Met Your Mother" Has Taught Me

"How I Met Your Mother" is one of those TV shows you can watch and not have to think to much about. It will make you laugh and make you cry, but you don't always realize the advice it gives you about life, and once you find HIMYM underlying words of wisdom you appreciate the whole gang that much more.

1. Never give up.

Even though the whole plot is how he met his children's mother, his underlying message is to never give up. After countless heart breaks and wrong turns, Ted never fully loses his belief in true love or that he will find a job that makes him happy, and in the end, he finds it. Whether it is love you are searching for, or something you have been working toward your whole life, if you stop striving toward that goal it may never happen.

2. Never fall for the guy with the smooth plays.

Barney Stinson is full of classic and unique plays neatly placed in his play book...and as all of his relationships turned out, take this as a life lesson to never fall for the man who says all the right things and seems too good to be true because, in more cases than not, they aren't good at all.

3. Do not settle for anything less than a Marshall to your Lilly.

Marshall and Lilly are the ultimate couple, they are the couple you look at and your heart starts to melt. Never settle for someone that will not support you or make you feel better when you are down, or fight with you but then realize that being together is more important than any argument. There are so many lessons Lilly and Marshall teach us, so let them be your couple idols.

4. You are never to old for a high five.

According to Barney (and he knows his facts) high fives have been around since humans have and the act of slapping another person's hand with all five fingers in an act of encouragement should never die. "How I Met Your Mother" enlightens you on all the possibilities of high fives, high sixes, the almighty high five, a condolence five, and even the ultimate high five so large that it holds all past high fives and all high fives there is to come. Sometimes, all you need to make your day a little better is a five of highs.

5. Never be anything less than legen... wait for it... dary, legendary.

Barney Stinson is full of dos and don'ts, but one of his most definite dos is to make sure everything you do is legendary. Don't just exist in this world; live it, and make sure what you do you will be proud of because if you just let life pass you by and do not grab hold of opportunities, then what is the point of living.

6. Do not forget who your true friends are.

Life moves on and things change and we get busy, but never stop putting in an effort for your friends. They have seen you at your best and been there for you at your worst, but losing a friend is like a bad break up, you will miss them and things are never the same once they are gone. So never forget who your true friends are, because finding a true friend is almost like finding a unicorn and never let them go once you found them.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
