Homecoming is an exciting time at every college campus. Who doesn't love seeing organizations come together to create fun, energetic campaigns? With all the photos, videos, T-shirts and booths spread out around campus, it's sometimes difficult to sift through the gimmicks and remember why we should take the time to vote for a worthy candidate. Here are the top five things to remember during homecoming season when voting for your king and queen.
1. Everyone is a Hokie. When you put all the campaigning aside, you realize that the common denominator connecting all of the candidates is that they all represent Virginia Tech. Although there are separate organizations sponsoring each individual, we are all Hokies. No matter who wins, we must to remember that the winners represent so much more than their organization -- they are a symbol of a true Hokie and deserve our support. You can check out the individual candidates here.
2. Everyone supports or stands behind an amazing cause. When you take the time to look into the candidates and the reasons why the candidates are running, some of their stories are unexpected and truly inspiring.
3. Everyone has a past. The candidates who are on homecoming court are not chosen at random-- there is a reason why they stood out above the rest to represent Virginia Tech. Make sure you take the time to learn about the candidates. Find out what they are involved in on campus and throughout the Blacksburg community.
4. Everyone is human. Of course, everyone wants their organization of choice to win the crown. But when it comes down to it, shouldn't homecoming be more than the title itself? Remember not to be overly competitive and ruthless. Keep that Hokie spirit alive even during elections.
5. Homecoming should be fun! Enjoy the football game, check out some of the homecoming events on campus and keep it lighthearted and fun!
