What Healthy Eating Really Means

A brief realization of how health is really affected by the food we eat.

It's no secret that we enjoy our occasional fast food stops. But what if those stops were actually killing us? America is claimed to be one of the most overweight countries on the planet. That's actually awful to know, and unfortunately nothing looks very hopeful or bright with that either. In the United States, our food is monitored by the Department of Agriculture which means as a result; corn is going to be starring as the lead role. Research has pin pointed that corn is the culprit and sadly no one is stepping up against it. Like dogs, corn is bad for us by being too starchy. Starches then can effect the heart, and unfortunately that belly fat we all have to face in the mirror, ends up effecting your liver to the point it's time to find a new one. Foods can actually be dangerous, but that too is no secret.

I've been taking this Health Education course at school, and every documentary we have watched as a class has been covering the story of the Bogalusa L.A. health studies where school nurses perform health exams on the children from Kindergarten age to third grade and they watch the children's blood pressures, cholesterol, and BMI. This study began in 1972 by Dr. Gerald S. Berenson who was a pediatric cardiologist. The study was and still is done on students from ages five to eight and it is done to address the problem of capacity building in minority health research.

I mention a brief summary of the Bogalusa study because it's the start to something, something we all linger for but never grab on to. It would be health. Being healthy people believe would require going to the gym on a membership fee, or cutting everything out of your diet that you actually enjoy. In all reality however, it's not all that. Being healthy is having a day to eat that bad food you love so much so your body has fatty acids to metabolize, or enjoying lean meats over red meats. Being healthy however also comes at a higher price. In belief of common people, healthy foods are more expensive, but it is believed to be expensive because it's the way the Government is assumed to control us the people. The higher the prices; the more likely we are to turn to the cheaper unhealthier selections where corn is a preservative and sodium is through the roof. The other side of things is exercise however, you don't need a gym membership to take your dog to the park and run around or to walk down the street for a few minutes. A simple walk burns a heavy amount of calories; for FREE!

As one can see, eating healthy does have a cost, but it isn't much when it comes to your health. Keep your liver to yourself and have a good week!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
