What Have We Normalized?

Together, we have allowed something historically shameful to happen.

What have we normalized? I say "we" meaning society. Not the republicans or the democrats or independents or any other large political faction. I say "we" meaning all of us.

Together, we have allowed something historically shameful to happen, but it is not something new. I could share the similarities between the rise of the third Reich and the successful campaign run by Donald J. Trump, but no one seems to care.

No one cared when Trump mocked a disabled man.

No one cared when Trump claimed on record that he wanted to grab women by their genitals.

No one cared when Trump didn't release his tax returns.

No one cared when twelve women came forward to accuse Trump of sexual harassment and assault – no one blinked an eye; we assumed they were all lying.

Russia actively and knowingly worked to undermine our democratic election. Our intelligence agencies – the best in the world – have proven this fact over and over again since the election. Not only did Trump lose the popular vote, our intelligence agencies have discovered extremely disheartening evidence of our over 200-year-old democracy becoming weak and frail.

To use a cliché, it was a perfect storm. An unprecedented candidate with a past of racism, sexism, no government experience, conflicting interests and a complete lack of empathy became the president of the United States.

I find the term, "The Divided States of America" rather fitting. There are people who think he is a smart businessman and exactly what this country needs. Then there are people who think he is about to destroy this country.

We can't ignore the facts. We are about to enter a critical period of world history where the longest running democracy to ever exist is about to be – if it hasn't already been – challenged greatly.

The world has just had its third straight year of record-breaking temperatures. The United States is still a hegemon as China and Russia rise to the top. The hegemon of the world, the country that has determined futures for others, has elected Donald J. Trump, a person who has said climate change is a hoax.

He has appointed the CEO of Exxon Mobil – Rex Tillerson – as Secretary of State. I want you to stop and think for a minute about what is happening. We can not be comfortable in our homes. We all need to read and think critically. When the President starts to discredit every news source that has covered presidential elections and presidential terms for hundreds of years, and only credits the sources who publish what the President wants, we fall into fascism.

Our country is on a slippery slope towards something unknown.

I don't want you to be afraid, but I want you to be uncomfortable.

I want you to read and educate yourselves. Pay attention to what our president does. Make him work for us. Do not allow him to make money illegally. Participate in democracy.

I'm not predicting a doomed fate for America, but I feel we must be prepared.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
