In August 2014, a point-and-click style indie-horror game was released that took the PC-gaming community by storm: "Five Nights at Freddy's." Since its initial release, designer and developer Scott Cawthon has created and released three additional "Five Nights at Freddy's" games on Steam, iOS, and Android. But now, it's much more than a game.
Though the style and the objective stays the same for each of the games, they're all a little bit different. The first three are very similar: You're playing as a night-shift security guard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza -- something similar to Chuck E. Cheese's -- and you have to work from midnight to 6 a.m. without getting yourself killed by the freaky animatronics that come to life at night, and it only gets harder as the nights and days go on. There are only slight differences within these three, but they take place in different areas of time, adding onto the overall creepy storyline of the game itself.
After the first game was released, there was a lot of hype behind it. It grabbed the attention of many YouTubers, who did "Five Nights at Freddy's" let's-plays as they continued to be released. Specifically, the YouTuber Markiplier deemed himself the king of "Five Nights at Freddy's," as he has successfully beat every game Cawthon has produced, as well as the Nightmare modes within them. Each and every game was hyped up before and after their releases, and all of them have very positive ratings.
Before the fourth game was released in July 2015, there was an announcement that April that the game was to be turned into a movie. Warner Brothers bought the rights to the game, and with Scott Cawthon alongside them, they plan to make an "insane, terrifying, and weirdly adorable movie." Since the announcement, there haven't been many major updates by anyone in the movie industry about the upcoming film. There have been very small teasers, but other than that, they have kept everything quiet.
In November 2015, Cawthon released a teaser for another "FNAF" game. It won't be a continuation in the "FNAF" series. Instead, this one is called "FNAF World," and it's an RPG.
Earlier this month, it was said that a book was to be released about "Five Nights at Freddy's." But the book was released early, and it's now available for purchase on Amazon. The 464-page story is about a girl named Charlie who returns to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza 10 years after everything happened. (This is assuming that "everything that happened" would be what happened in the games.) The book has 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, and most of the reviews are positive.
As of today, there are four complete games, with one in the works. There's a book. There's a movie in the works. What's next? Could there be something more for Scott Cawthon and "Five Nights at Freddy's," or has it become overrated despite its positive reviews?
